Description

"Plants small, to 13 cm tall. Petiole adaxially purplish, abaxially pale green, narrow, ± narrowly winged, sparsely arachnoid to subglabrous;plant base with some whitish hairs, tunic not observed in the cultivated material. Leaves light greyish green, mid-vein purplish proximally, pale green distally, blade narrowly oblanceolate on outline, usually 4–7 × 1.2–1.7 cm, usually sparsely arachnoid beneath, pinnatilobed to pinnatifid, with 2–3 pairs of triangula to triangular-deltoid, short, ± recurved lobes, terminal blade part either not discernible or subacute and triangular, lobes and interlobes ± entire. Scapes brownish green, distally often suffused purplish, arachnoid, overtopping leaves. Capitulum yellow, to 2.5 cm wide. Involucre with contrasting colours (whitish phyllary borders versus dark, blackish green phyllary middle parts), 5–7 mm wide and narrowly rounded to subobconical at base. Outer phyllaries 7–10, ± not imbricate, appressed, ovate to lanceolate, usually 4–6 × (1.5–) 2.0–2.4 mm, with a white border 0.3–0.5 mm wide, inside bordered pale green, middle strip ± black, narrow, margins glabrous to ciliate, apex purplish, flat to callose. Inner phyllaries 12–14 mm long, of unequal width, ± flat at apex. Outer ligules ± flat, faintly striped pinkish grey outside, inner ligule teeth grey purplish. Anthers polliniferous, pollen grains irregular in size. Stigmas pure yellow or slightly greenish yellow, with hyaline pubescence outside. Achenes light greyish pale brown, 5.0–5.1 × 1.0–1.2 mm, body ± densely spinulose in upper 1/4–1/3, spinules ± erect, sometimes a spinule reaches the cone basal part, body subabruptly narrowing into ± cylindrical, robust cone ca. 0.7 (–0.8) × (0.35–) 0.4 mm, cone often slightly thicker distally; beak thin, ca. 6.5 mm long, pappus yellowish white, ca. 6 mm long.
