Description

"Plants small, to 8–11 cm tall. Petiole deep grey-purple, narrow, unwinged, ± arachnoid; plant base with whitish hairs, tunic absent. Leaves light greyish green to lighter mid-green, with grey-purplish mid-vein, obovate in outline, 4–8 (–10) × 1.5–3.2 cm, sparsely arachnoid on veins beneath, outer leaves shallowly pinnatilobed, with 2–4 pairs of triangular-deltoid, subrecurved, entire or rarely sparsely denticulate lateral lobes, middle leaves pinnatifid to pinnatisect, with 2–4 pairs of triangular to falcate, patent to subrecurved, ± entire, acute lateral segments, distal margin ± convex, paroximal margin concave; interlobes short, broad, entire; terminal segment not distinct, usually broadly triangular, entire, with short, ± patent basal lobules. Scapes brownish-purplish, arachnoid, ± equalling leaves. Capitulum yellow, ca. 2–3 cm wide. Involucre with contrasting colours of ± white phyllary border and blackish middle part, narrow, 5–7 mm wide and ± obconical at base. Outer phyllaries 8–12, ± subimbricate (sometimes a conspicuously longer outer phyllary occurs among the shorter ones, ca. 7.5 × 1.5 mm), ovate to lanceolate, usually (3.5–) 4.5–5.5 × 1.9–2.6 mm, appressed, with a whitish-membranous margin ca. 0.2–0.5 mm wide, divided from the ± black to black green, 0.4–0.8 mm wide middle part by a pale green zone, margins distally ciliate, apex purplish, callose; inner phyllaries of unequal width (often neighbouring ones fused), usually 10–13 mm long, elongating at late anthesis and later to reach 17 mm, ± flat at apex. Outer ligules flat or cucullate, striped light brownish purple or light greyish purple outside, inner ligule teeth usually brownish purple or ± yellow. Anthers polliniferous, anther tube with longitudinal brownish red lines, pollen grains irregular in size. Stigmas greenish or yellow-green, with a dense dark grey pubescence outside. Achenes light grey to light greyish stramineous-brown, (5.9–) 6.2–6.6 × 1.1–1.2 mm, body sparsely squamulose and spinulose in upper 1/4, squamules incised, body very gradually narrowing into a subconical cone 0.9–1.1 mm long; beak thin, ca. 7 mm long, pappus yellowish white, ca. 6.5 mm long.
