Crepis L., Sp. Pl.: 805. 1753

  • Limonoseris Peterm., Fl. Lips. Excurs.: 589. 18382

  • Crepis sect. Eucrepis DC., Prodr. 7: 161. 1838, nom. inval.
  • 1. As has been discovered by Greuter & al. in Taxon 54: 166 (2005), this name was validly published in a German translation by W. B. A. von Steinwehr of works on Compositae by the pre-Linnaean author S. Vaillant in 1754. It is homotypic by lectotypification Through Greuter & al. (l.c.). Proposals have been made by Brummitt in Taxon 57: 663 (2008) and by Greuter in Taxon 57: 1016 (2008) for inclusion of this translation in the list of suppressed works ("Opera utique oppressa", Art. 32.9 of the Code). The proposal by Brummitt has been approved by the Nomenclatural Committee for Vascular Plants but the Committee's decision has been objected by the General Committee and a final decision deferred pending further debate. The names by Vaillant published in this 1454 translation thus continue to be valid., 2. Based on Crepis biennis, homotypic through lectotypification of the name Crepis., 3. Kuntze took up the name Hieracioides, nomenclaturally thus being an isonym, illegitimately for Crepis and with the altered spelling "Hieraciodes", which is to be corrected to "Hieracioides" in the many corresponding binomials published by him under that generic name., 4. According to the Code (Vienna Code, Art. 62.4) generic names ending in -oides or -odes, thus also Hieracioides, are treated as feminine, irrespective of the gender assigned by the original author.

  • 15. Schultz Bipontinus gave two specific names under Dianthoseris, one, "D. schimperi" with a description, the other, "D. rueppellii" with a reference to an earlier description by Fresenius (in Mus. Senckenberg. 3: 78. 1839) who published Rüppell's collection. He did not, however, provide a generic description; therefore neither the genus name, nor the names of the two species were validly published in this paper of 1842.
